NightOwl is apt, because the stealthy, silent type that doesn’t leak sound into the environment so you can listen to music to your heart’s content while the rest of the family is watching TV or tuning into kittens on YouTube. The easy and over-simplistic way of looking at the NightOwl is it is a (mostly) sealed version of the open-backed NightHawk. The next saga in the AudioQuest story moves back to traditional audio, as the Niagra power conditioners roll out. As night follows day follows night, the NightOwl Carbon followed in the NightHawk’s clawprints. These, too, were followed by the NightHawk Carbon (a revised version of the original, with the most obvious change being a move from wood-ish ear cups to carbon-ish). First came the Digital Critters (the DragonFly DACs and the JiitterBug, alongside the Beetle that’s still floating around the digital aether), but this was followed by the company’s first headphones, the NightHawk. It still makes those cables – covering every base from ‘cheap as chips’ to ‘I’ll collect them in my Friday helicopter’ – but has recently diversified its range significantly. My guess is that these two cables were developed specifically for each model.AudioQuest used to be best known for a vast range of high-performance audio cables. And vice versa, the long cable makes the owl sound hawkish. Higher sound level, more detail, more in your face. If I plug the short into the hawk it sounds more like an owl. My owl came with a short thick cable, the hawk with a ca double length thinner cable. However the Audiotailor Jade OTL headphone amp is a clear winner with both headphones.Ĥ The cable plays a role. The Denon DA10 does a nice job, and can be transported easily. It is nice to have both alternatives!ģ I found that both the hawks and the owls benefited by better amplification than what the Fiio x3 can deliver on its own. These recordings have more atmosphere, while the SW remix in the dowloaded PCM file is more "detailed" and "analytical". This is certainly an interesting alternative to the SW remix, although with some shortcomings. I have not listened much to these, and was impressed that the recordings sound so good, but then again, I used a very good recording chain (Lyra Atlas cart, Io phono preamp), although with a less good recorder (Korg) than the one I use now (Tascam). But also, quite different.Ģ Listening to my recordings of the original Yes vinyl albums, made in DSD format (vinyl rips), made seven years ago. I found both very good, good enough to get the sense of Wilsons remixes compared to the original Yes albums. With interesting results.ġ Using the Qobuz 24 - 96 download that I purchased and transferred to my Fiio x3g2 DAP. I often like his work, as artist as well as producer, and have no prejudice. The SW remixes of Yes are controversial in the sense that some like them, others not.but I think most agree that the sound is quite good on the remixes - as is usual, with SW, in my experience.
